CLAiT Information

The first CLAiT qualification was launched back in 1987. RSA CLAiTquickly became the most popular IT qualification in the UK. In 2002 thequalification was developed into an innovative package of three newqualifications. By June 2005 some 2.5 million learners had achievedCLAiT certification.

CLAiT 2006 builds upon the best features of the OCR CLAiT suite andhas been available for centres to deliver from September 2005.

CLAiT 2006

CLAiT 2006 is a package of three computer qualifications whichprovides a one-stop shop for learners of all abilities looking todevelop or progress their skills.

  • New CLAiT - for the beginner - boosts confidence
  • CLAiT Plus - for those with some experience - increases IT productivity
  • CLAiT Advanced - for confident and productive IT users - enhances IT proficiency

Learners can choose between single-units, a certificate or a diplomaand will receive a certificate for whichever option they achieve. For acertificate they must achieve three units and for a diploma they mustachieve five units; both options must include the mandatory unit.

Learners can progress through the levels within CLAiT 2006,developing and enhancing their IT skills as they go. CLAiT 2006 canlead to exciting things such as website design and electronic media

New CLAiT

Overview:

The OCR Level 1 Certificate/Diploma for IT Users (New CLAiT) is aqualification designed to recognise the skills, knowledge andunderstanding of IT users everywhere, whether in employment, educationor training. Courses leading to a New CLAiT qualification will equiplearners with the basic range of transferable skills necessary to meetthe demands of the modern workplace, and will prepare learners forprogression to further training and accreditation in IT User skills atLevel 2 and Level 3.

New CLAiT has been redeveloped to produce a qualification thatprovides a far clearer progression route to Level 2 at both unit leveland whole qualification level. The new qualification aims to reflectand build on the strengths of the previous version, incorporatingrevised content, which now maps, where appropriate, to 100% of theNational Occupational Standards. This takes account of recent softwaredevelopments and provides greater flexibility, ease-of-use andrelevance. Over 2 million people in the UK now hold CLAiT certificates,making CLAiT the benchmark qualification in IT.

This revised specification has been developed in consultation withpartners in industry, further education and schools. It also retainsOCR's unique computer-based assessment technologies developed by OCRover recent years.

New CLAiT qualification aims to provide a nationally recognisedstandard in IT assessment that is accessible and flexible whilst alsobeing reliable, consistent and valid. It is designed to fit the needsof the learner, employer and training provider.

In order to achieve a certificate qualification, candidates arerequired to achieve three units, the core unit plus two additionaloptional units. The core unit has been designed to accredit acandidate's initial skills in operating the hardware and softwarecomponents of a typical computer workstation. The optional units allowcandidates to develop skills in a range of different IT applications.Candidates can also achieve a diploma qualification; they are requiredto achieve five units, the core unit plus four additional optionalunits. Certification is also available for single units. Each unit isregarded as a worthwhile achievement in its own right. Candidates havethe option of achieving as many or as few units as are appropriate fortheir own learning needs or employment situation.

 

New CLAiT is part of a suite of qualifications in IT User skillsoffered by OCR. OCR also offers accreditation in IT User skills atLevel 2 (CLAiT Plus) and Level 3 (CLAiT Advanced). Candidates who aresuccessful in achieving accreditation at Level 1 will be able toprogress to the qualification at Level 2. New CLAiT also provides abasis for progression to the NVQs which form part of the iTQ suite, NVQLevels 1, 2 and 3 for IT Users.

CLAiT Plus

Overview:

The OCR Level 2 Certificate/Diploma for IT Users (CLAiT Plus) is aqualification designed to recognise the skills, knowledge andunderstanding of IT users in employment, education or training. Coursesleading to the CLAiT Plus qualification will equip learners with thebroad range of transferable skills necessary to meet the demands of themodern workplace, and will prepare learners for progression to trainingin IT User skills at Level 3. The qualification recognises complex andspecialist skills in the use of IT in vocational contexts.

CLAiT Plus has been redeveloped to produce a qualification thatforms a far more coherent part of a suite of 3 CLAiT qualificationscovering 3 levels. There is now a clearer progression route from Level1 to Level 2 and from Level 2 to Level 3 at both unit level and wholequalification level. The new qualification aims to reflect and build onthe strengths of the previous version, incorporating revised content,which now maps, where appropriate, to 100% of the National OccupationalStandards. This takes account of recent software developments andprovides greater flexibility, ease-of-use and relevance. Over 2 millionpeople in the UK now hold CLAiT certificates, making CLAiT thebenchmark qualification in IT.

This revised specification has been developed in consultation withpartners in industry, further education and schools. It also featuresOCR's unique form of electronic testing for units 1 to 3 as an optionalalternative assessment method to the paper based assignment.

CLAiT Plus has been designed to accredit a broad range of IT skills,ensuring that, regardless of the optional units chosen, the learnerwill be prepared for the needs of the IT-based workplace in acomprehensive manner.

In order to achieve a certificate qualification, candidates arerequired to achieve three units, the core unit plus two additionaloptional units. The core unit has been designed to encompass theessential core knowledge and competencies that are needed in theworkplace to complete both routine and non-routine tasks. The optionalunits allow candidates to develop skills in a range of different ITapplications. CLAiT Advancedprovides a basis for sideways progression to the OCR Level 3 NVQ for ITUsers (part of the iTQ suite). Candidates may extend their specialistIT application skills by undertaking further specialist units from thesuite of units available at Level 3. Candidates may also choose tofurther develop their technical skills and to progress to the NVQLevels 1 to 4 and VRQs Levels 1 to 4 for IT Practitioners/Professionals.
